Solid and devoted

My name is Guru Kaur, and I am the one who introduced Dalbir to kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan. I lived with Dalbir and his family for seven months around the time of the Sikh Tercentenary (1999). I inspired Dalbir to know more about his own Sikh heritage and also cultivated his desire to share it with others.  At that time my husband, the photographer Nick Fleming was in Punjab, interested in photographing the Nihang Singhs.

The following year, Nick and Dalbir travelled to the Kumbh Mela at Allahabad where together they came across yogis, saddhus, and holy men which open their minds to other spiritual traditions. Since then Dalbir has solidly and devotedly been Nick’s assistant in Northern India. Together they have been privileged to share many experiences as they visited and stayed in numerous sacred and historical sites.

Nick’s way of working, by living for many months with the groups whom he photographs, means that Dalbir has absorbed a greater and deeper knowledge than your average travel guide.  Dalbir and Nick have completed the Amaranath, Kedarnath, and Gangotri pilgrimages right up into the high Himalayas and toured at length the Punjab, Kashmir, the Himalayas, Rajasthan and other parts of India always seeking out the unknown and atypical tourist destinations.  This is a continuing working relationship.  Dalbir’s role is often to overcome the language barriers and be the fixer, and make sure that Nick feels safe and secure to concentrate on his work.  Dalbir owns his own vehicle and has a comprehensive list of contacts.  Dalbir has a good command of the English language.  He is used to spending long hours out in the field (literally sometimes!) ensuring that the photographer gets what he is looking for.

As well as working in collaboration with Nick, Dalbir has also been used by several other photographers, journalists and visitors to Northern India giving them a feel of what real, rural India is like.  Dalbir has been used and recommended by the BBC.  Dalbir is flexible at helping you put together an itinerary to meet your needs and can also suggest many places to visit which you may not have heard about before.

  1. Wow, great to see you again Dalbir ji. I was hosted by him, his wife Avneet and their entire family in Anandpur sahib. He showed myself and my two friends to all the historical parts of Anandpur including fantastic gurdwaras and areas once inhibited by Sikh gurus and their devotees that amazed me! I was not going to share this, but then he took us to meet his beautiful family where they cooked the best India food I had my entire 6 month stay in India. Made with so much love and devotion. It gets better, we ate on the roof top with the sun setting, Anandpur Sahib gurdwara in the distance, and listened to amazing stories of our(Sikh) Gurus with love and devotion from Dalbir. Great food made with love, beautiful history, and all in the City of Bliss. Thanks, I look forward to seeing you all again!

  2. Highly recommended host and guide for India. Dalbir Singh is a very knowledgeable, devoted, kind and attentive brother in faith. He and his wonderful family made sure that every personal need and then some was taken care of. For me personally, the best thing about Dalbir arranging and taking care of my time, especially in the Anandpursahib area, is how entertaining and fun he is to be with. We shared many laughs and memorable times together and through that developed what I hope and trust to be a lifetime friendship. I look forward to having him host and arrange things for me next time I am in India and I will unequivocally recommend him to others. Thanks again Dalbir and your family…I miss you already!

We have just finished the most amazing 19 day adventure around Punjab and Kashmir with Dalbir. Dalbir planned our tour to include our requests and was flexible during the tour to take advantage of his local knowledge of events. He took us to places that many tourists would not see and we felt extremely grateful for this opportunity. His professionalism, knowledge of India both historical and present and his ability to relate to both his clients and wider community has made our tour so enjoyable. At all times Dalbir made sure we were safe, we understood the cultural protocols and he interpreted on our behalf.
Thank you Dalbir for being such a wonderful guide and now friend 😊
